THE PRESIDENT OF STANDARD AND POOR'S TELLS CONGRESS...
THE U-S GOVERNMENT ISN'T LIKELY TO DEFAULT ON ITS DEBT.

BUT HE ALSO WOULDN'T TELL CONGRESS EXACTLY WHAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD TO DO RETAIN IT'S TRIPLE-A DEBT RATING.
DEVEN SHARMA BACKED AWAY FROM RECENT REPORTS....
QUOTING AN S.&P. ANALYST SAYING THE DEFICIT WOULD HAVE TO BE CUT BY AT LEAST FOUR TRILLION DOLLARS OVER TEN YEARS TO MAINTAIN THE COUNTRY'S TRIPLE-A RATING:
(tske sot)
SHARMA says: " congressman there have been a number of plans that have been announced by the administration...
GARRETT says: "and have you been able to look at them...?"
SHARMA says: " and we think some of the plans reduce debt levels , could bring u-s debt burden, deficit levels in the range of a threshold for a triple "a" ratings. so we have analyzed it , but we're waiting to see what the final proposal is for a sovereign analyst to really analyze it more thoroughly .."
GARRETT says: "with regard to your own analysis of july fourteenth that says what we really need to have here to avoid a downgrade is a four trillion dollar structural change. as far as i know, the reid plan does not reach that level. so would that be satisfactory?"
SHARMA says: " congressman, i think we were misquoted. we do not comment on any specific plan or the political choices or policy choices being made . we are just commenting on what is the level of debt burden , what is the level of deficit that must meet the threshold to retain the triple -"a". and since the four trillion number put forward by a number of congressmen and the administration, our analyst was just commenting on those proposals that would bring
the threshold within the range of what triple-a sovereign debt would require."

SHARMA SAID, IN EFFECT, HIS AGENCY DOESN'T GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS.
